Let's Milk our Mamas for Ice Cream!
Subtitled: a quick education about PETA
My oh my, just when you think PETA couldn't be even crazier, they come out with this article:
PETA asks Ben & Jerry's to use breast milk19 hours ago
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Ice cream made from breast milk? That's what the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream to consider making.
The Virginia-based nonprofit group sent a letter to company co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield on Tuesday asking them to use human breast milk instead of cow's milk in their products.
PETA said the health of consumers and cows would benefit from the switch.
Ben & Jerry's spokesman Rob Michalak said the company applauds PETA's creative approach to bring attention to an issue, but believes that a mother's milk is best used by a child.
If you haven't really researched PETA's history, spend some time. Apparently, PETA would be much happier if nursing moms showed up for work every day at 8 a.m., strapped on a machine and milked for hours on end. From a currently nursing mom who is just trying to pump enough to go on a 5 day vacation, they are insane. My nipples hurt and itch and I'm exhausted. I have a ton of respect for working women who have to do this EVERY day for their little ones.
Here is a full version of the article with the letter from PETA:

Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months"
Yes, this also true of humans. But I don't think they've done their research as the numbers of women breastfeeding in the U.S. up to 12 months is less than 20% (2005 CDC). So consider this: how much milk can a woman pump while they are breastfeeding their own child? Sure there are some women that could produce 15-20 extra ounces a day. But the average is more like me: I could handle maybe 8 ounces a day (and that has even been a struggle). With our current rates, it's just impossible to believe we could make any impact on the food industry.
Not to mention, allergens ARE passed through breastmilk. How do we screen for those? My daughter is a great example: a very small amount of milk or soy in my diet gives her painful gas and behavior issues.
Remember, PETA is for the ethical treatment of ANIMALS, not the ethical treatment of HUMANS.

- Your Daddy Kills Animals --which advises children"
Until your daddy learns that it’s not “fun” to kill,
keep your doggies and kitties away from him.
He’s so hooked on killing defenseless animals
that they could be next! - Ingrid Newkirk--PETAs History
Quotes from Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's founder:
“I wish we all would get up and go into the labs and take the animals out or burn them down.”
Newkirk has said that “everything” PETA does “is based [aimed] at adults.” (see above--this is a boldfaced lie)
“Probably everything we do is a publicity stunt ... we are not here to gather members, to please, to placate, to make friends. We're here to hold the radical line.”
(referring to hand, foot and mouth disease): "It would be good for animals, good for human health and good for the environment."
